Ebook About
The compelling, poignant true stories of victims of a notorious adoption scandal—some of whom learned the truth from Lisa Wingate’s bestselling novel Before We Were Yours and were reunited with birth family members as a result of its wide reach From the 1920s to 1950, Georgia Tann ran a black-market baby business at the Tennessee Children’s Home Society in Memphis. She offered up more than 5,000 orphans tailored to the wish lists of eager parents—hiding the fact that many weren’t orphans at all, but stolen sons and daughters of poor families, desperate single mothers, and women told in maternity wards that their babies had died. The publication of Lisa Wingate’s novel Before We Were Yours brought new awareness of Tann’s lucrative career in child trafficking. Adoptees who knew little about their pasts gained insight into the startling facts behind their family histories. Encouraged by their contact with Wingate and award-winning journalist Judy Christie, who documented the stories of fifteen adoptees in this book, many determined Tann survivors set out to trace their roots and find their birth families. Before and After includes moving and sometimes shocking accounts of the ways in which adoptees were separated from their first families. Often raised as only children, many have joyfully reunited with siblings in the final decades of their lives. Christie and Wingate tell of first meetings that are all the sweeter and more intense for time missed and of families from very different social backgrounds reaching out to embrace better-late-than-never brothers, sisters, and cousins. In a poignant culmination of art meeting life, many of the long-silent victims of the tragically corrupt system return to Memphis with the authors to reclaim their stories at a Tennessee Children’s Home Society reunion . . . with extraordinary results.Advance praise for Before and After“In Before and After, authors Judy Christie and Lisa Wingate tackle the true stories behind Wingate’s blockbuster Before We Were Yours, of the orphans who survived the Tennessee Children’s Home Society. With a journalist’s keen eye and a novelist’s elegant prose, Christie and Wingate weave together the stories that inspired Before We Were Yours with the lives that were changed as a result of reading the novel. Readers will be educated, enlightened, and enraptured by this important and flawlessly executed book.”—Pam Jenoff, author of The Orphan’s Tale and The Lost Girls of Paris

Book Before and After: The Incredible Real-Life Stories of Orphans Who Survived the Tennessee Children's Home Society Review :

Very slow start, basically, a published present-tense notebook of correspondence between the authors, mainly Judy, in preparation for a gathering in Memphis of Tennessee Georgia Tann placement children's families. While Tann is repeatedly condemned in monstrous terms, hardly a page goes by without a pitch for Before We were Yours, Lisa's fictional but derivative of fact predecessor book. There is no broader picture researched of the mores of the WWI-WWII times, when unwed mothers were generally a hidden topic and exploited widely, not just Tann. And there is no discussion of broader implications of the new DNA testing that really made this book possible, mainly, Ancestry.com and 23andme.com, yet no dialogue about those resources per se. That is, the greater picture of all of us whom we may be newly related to, confirmations and new revelations. No discussion of what it would be like to be carrying out a court order (political connections or no) to remove a child from a trash home where the dad comes home violent and drunk and the little kids fend for themselves, child kidnapping according to the authors, vs, child rescue seen from another perspective. Tann died before being convicted or having a chance to tell her side of the issues, and several examples provided demonstrate good placements. No appendix with links, references and referrals, but several comments about the 60 minutes story. Much of the book is filler, prep notes, and periodic interspersed emotional commentary rehashing the chapter prior. And the 19 children out of over a thousand who died, implications that child abuse/neglect by Tann led to manslaughter, completely unsubstantiated, do the authors have clue of what childhood mortality was in those days when all we had was penicillin?
I loved the book. Having adopted 2 children, and fostered several others, I have always been been so sad about the stories behind many children’s stories. What a sad but also uplifting book. I had preordered this book for months before it was released, and just before release date, I read Before We Were Yours. To read the true stories behind the first book just blew me away. It is hard to believe the extreme cruelty of stealing these children away from their mothers. I am, however, very glad some of the stolen children have found out their own stories, and have even been able to meet their birth mothers and families. Thank you, Judy and Lisa, for bringing this about, and I will never forget this book. It is One of the best I have read in the last few years!
